By Sqn Ldr Brian Mennel - WMCO C&E Yorks Wing
The RAF 2 Days Marches took place over the weekend of 24th &
25th April. The wing took 5 teams, two entered for the 20km
march and three for the 40km march. With over 70 cadets and
staff, Central & East Yorkshire Wing were the second largest
contingent at the event (Middlesex Wing had 90 participating)
with some 1400 marchers participating. All ours completed and
were awarded their prestigious medals at the end of a gruelling 2
days of marching in lovely late spring weather. Central & East
Yorkshire Wing were also given the honour of taking the salute as
teams returned when Sector 5 Commander Sqn Ldr Shirley Tune,
who was attending as part of the support staff, was invited to take
the Dais. Road marching is probably the one wing event that lasts
in effect all year as following the Cosford marches we then move
into training for the International 4 Days Marches at Nijmegen in
July.

There is a short break then back to training again in October
but staff are not idle as much planning has to occur at this time. It
is not just a ‘walk in the park’ as some may think, the teams train
hard over the months up to the marches and each day’s march at
both Cosford and Nijmegen is equivalent in distance to a
marathon, but all who participate thoroughly enjoy the
experience. A heartfelt thanks to all the staff who have helped,
either as team leaders or support staff over the training period to
now.
