The Wing recently held its first Strings rehearsal – with 5 violins and 2 cellos attending the six hour practice session held in York.

The group played a mixture of music from across the ages, and by the end of the day had developed into a good sounding team. The players came from seven different squadrons as far placed as Middlesbrough, Scarborough, Brough and Ripon – and despite having never met each other before went home all good friends. Four of the attending cadets also achieved their musicians badges during the day and were duly awarded them.

One of the cadets attending was Cadet Eleanor Sigsworth from 1869 (Middlesbrough) Squadron, she commented: “I really enjoyed the variety of pieces, and it was great to get to know other like minded cadets from across the wing. I really enjoyed it – it was a really fun day!”

The Wing Bandmaster, Sergeant (ATC) Adam Waudby remarked “I’m really pleased at how this group has taken off – we aren’t aware of another similar string group in the Corps at the moment! One of Wing Music’s current aims is to be more inclusive, so it’s great that these cadets are now able to access musical opportunities within the Corps – and I look forward to seeing the group continue to develop.”

The Wing String Ensemble is only one of many groups currently running, or planned within the Wing, including a Concert Band and a Marching Band. Are you interested in joining in? Speak to your squadron staff about musical opportunities, or follow us on Facebook/Twitter on @ceyorksmusic
