Air Cadets from Longbenton flew back in time to 1956 when the Squadron first opened its doors to the community!

The young Air Cadets have been celebrating the squadron’s 60th birthday and they travelled back in time with the help of ex-squadron members.

The young cadets have been working with journalist Melanie Cornish from Bringing Words to Life in order to create a newspaper of memoirs to mark the squadron’s diamond anniversary.

Cadet Courtney Cartwright, 14, explained, “We did a lot or work with the Tyne and Wear Archives and RAF Museum and found out some very interesting facts and stories.

“We then asked people to get in touch who have an association with the squadron and we were really pleased with the response.

“We’ve interviewed ex-cadets from the 1950s and 1960s, a local historian and a lady who was in the Girl Venture Corps when it shared a building with the Air cadets in the 1970s and 80s. It was good fun to meet them and find out about their time with the squadron,” said Courtney.

Cadet Joseph Hodgson, 14, said, “We have really enjoyed this project and it’s great to be finding out new things and then writing about them in our own way.

“We can’t wait to finish the project next month and publish our work.” Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson said, “It’s been great to see the youngsters really engage with the project; producing some excellent pieces and I’m very excited to see the finished article.”
