With a striking throw and an outstanding jump two young people from Longbenton Squadron won Bronze at the Air Cadet’s National Athletics Championships.
The Championships, held at RAF Cosford, Shropshire, saw Courtney Cartwright, 14, and Ben Collins, 15, complete against the UK’s top air cadet athletes.
Both Courtney and Ben won Gold in the javelin and high jump events at both the Durham Northumberland Championships and the North Region Championships to secure their place on the North Region Team.
Courtney said; “It was a great feeling to be competing at the top level in our organisation and against some of the country’s best.
“I’ve only ever done javelin at school so to win bronze at the national’s is amazing!” she said.
“I was very happy to have won bronze; it was a really tough competition but enjoyable,” said former gymnast Ben.
The youngsters were also joined in the North Region team by fellow Longbenton Air Cadet Harry Dixon, 14, who competed in the 4x100m relay and helped the North Region Team to win Silver overall.
“We have never before had three people from Longbenton at the National Championships so it was great to be there cheering them on,” said Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson.
“They all did their best and deserve to have won a medal; it’s been a great morale boost for us all and all three should be very proud of their achievement.”
