On the evening of Tuesday 17th May Wigan & Leigh Mayor, Councillor Susan Loudon made a visit to the 723 Wigan Sqn Air Cadet Headquarters.
723 (Wigan) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets is highly thought of within the borough. The Mayor came to say thanks to the Sqn and also FS Mounfield who had chosen out of seven cadet units in the borough to become the Mayors cadet for this year. His role was to escort the Mayor in her duties within the Borough and also to be an ambassador for the Squadron. The Mayors visit was also a chance to see what the cadets do on a parade night.
Greeted by Mayors Cadet FS Mounfield, she was then escorted around the building by him and the Squadron’s OC Flight Lieutenant Hugh (Shuggie) Shields. The Mayor observed First Aid training in the hall before visiting the classrooms where in one she saw a group planning for a forthcoming Duke of Edinburgh expedition. In another the latest intake of twenty four of our newest members of the Squadron were being taught the basic knowledge that that will enable them to become fully enrolled as Air Cadets and hopefully go on to fulfil their potential.
Before the visit ended the Mayor thanked FS Mounfield the Squadron staff and cadets for a great visit. Thanking the Squadron, the Mayor said “I have been greatly impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm of the Officers and the Cadets during my visit to 723sqn. I am sure the cadets of the Sqn gain a great deal from the training and opportunities that they receive being part of the cadet organisation, which will no doubt open doors for them in the future. From my visit tonight and from what I have seen, I am confident that these Cadets are developing those attributes through 723 Sqn”.
