RAF Air Cadets from Longbenton have reached new heights after receiving its 5th High Sheriff of Tyne and Wear Award in recognition of the valuable services it provides to the community.

Youngsters Louis Baptist, 16, and James Douglas. 15, collected the squadron’s award at a ceremony held at Newcastle’s Centre for Life.

James said, “We had a good evening and got to chat to some other groups who were also receiving awards and found out what they do.

We do a lot of activities and they’re great fun and it’s great to think that the High Sheriff values what we do and the achievements we earn.”

High Sheriff Mrs Lucy Winskill OBE DL said, “Well done to everyone at the Squadron and I wish you even more success in the future. You should all be very proud.”

The youngsters also enjoyed an inspirational speech from Newcastle Eagles Head Coach, Fabulous Flournoy.

“It’s humbling to see so many young people representing their groups along with their adult volunteers; it takes just one person to believe and value a young person to make a difference and the groups should  be proud of themselves and what they do,” said Fab.

Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson said, “Our community really do value what we do and it makes such a difference to our young people and adult volunteers.

I thank them and the High Sheriff for their support and recognition,” added Gary.
