On Sunday the 6th December 148 (Barnsley) Squadron attended South and West Yorkshire Wing Headquarters for the Annual Duke of Edinburgh Presentation. We joined this event with almost 200 other cadets and staff from around the Wing.

Various awards were achieved by the Squadron at every level, Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. Various cadets and staff also completed staff qualifications. 16 cadets and 2 staff collected these awards from the Officer Commanding South and West Yorkshire Wing, Wing Commander Daniel.

There were several VIP’s at the event to show their support for the award and acknowledge the efforts taken to complete each journey to completion. These included The Assistant Regional Commandant Squadron Leader Gossow, North Region DofE Officer Sqn Ldr Johnson, Wing DofE Officer Sqn Ldr Williams, Sector Commanders, Wing HQ Permanent staff, Functional Wing Staff Officers and MOD Permanent Staff.

Some thoughts of the day were,

I thought the presentation was a great day and it was nice to meet the Wing Commander and for him to congratulate us on our achievement” Cdt Ingram.

In my opinion I thought it was a very good day with a very good turn out. The food was great and it was nice for the Wing Commander to give us his free time to recognise us for what we had accomplished over the past year” Cdt Bursztyn.

The day I thought was a nice experience and seeing so many others in the wing achieving results in DofE. It was also very generous of Wing Commander Daniel to give up some of his free time to support the presentation and recognise not just the cadets but staff as well for the achievements of the past year” Cdt Tawn.

“The presentation and refreshments were excellent. The turnout was amazing and I think it’s a good opportunity to let everyone take pride in what they’ve achieved. I believe everyone was quite honoured to meet Wing Commander Daniel, if it be for the first time or not, I was. I felt proud for the other cadets/staff who were also rewarded their DofE. Overall, it was a great day” Cpl Copeland.

“I thought the presentation was an eye opener to see how hard the Wing DofE Officer and other staff work across the whole Wing to get assist cadets to achieve their goals. It was great to see all the cadets and staff members be congratulated for various awards by the Wing Commander and other staff from the Air Training Corps. Overall a very well organising day filled with achievement for all” Cpl Owen.

“I am always proud as Wing DofE Officer to acknowledge the efforts from every Squadron across the Wing to complete awards and qualifications in the Award Scheme. It is also a special moment when Barnsley Air Cadets achieve, also being the Officer Commanding 148 (Barnsley) Squadron too. I think the Squadron as a whole has worked very hard to support the award this and every year. Special thanks go to the staff and cadet support staff who give up such an amount of time to support cadets across the award, thank you all. The Wing has had it’s best year for participation and completion and Barnsley have again proved to be a strong element of this success, well done. Spectemur Agenda” Sqn Ldr Williams.

“I am extremely happy to have completed my gold award. Unfortunately due to issue along the course of the award it has taken me much longer than I would have hoped to complete, however I am thrilled to have finished. It was good that even though I started this award as a cadet I managed to finish it as a Civilian Instructor. The presentation was a brilliant day with amazing food and drink. I was an honour to spend the time with Wing Commander Daniel and all the other guests who attended. I am looking forward to going to St James Palace to collect my award” CI Smedley

Well done to everyone on another great year of DofE from South and West Yorkshire Wing!
