861 (Wideopen) Squadron, the top performing Air Cadet Squadron in the North of England for 2015/16, is on the lookout for new recruits to join its ranks.
Cadet membership is open to young people, both male and female, who are aged 12 years (and in Year 8 at school) to 17 years old who are looking for a challenge and adventure. Cadets of all nationalities, backgrounds and abilities are equally welcome!
Not all Cadets join because they want a career with the Royal Air Force or Aerospace Industry - we are NOT a recruiting organisation for the Armed Forces – many join to experience the thrill of the wide range of activities that we offer and the opportunity to make lots of new friends.
The Air Cadets is a Ministry of Defence sponsored cadet force and we have high standards that we expect new recruits to learn and display. Cadets are expected to take pride in their uniform and appearance, be well-mannered and self-disciplined. We are all about teaching independence and leadership; we want our young people to push themselves and try lots of new things to broaden their life experience. We also want recruits to join something they can be rightly proud of and become part of our extended family.
Recruits will be expected to take part in as many of our activities as possible such as flying, target shooting, adventure training, parades and ceremonial, fieldcraft, sports and a whole lot more. We offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award and BTECs in Aviation Studies, Leadership and Teamworking which can be used by our cadets on their CVs. Lots of our cadets progress into higher education and the world of work on the experiences and qualifications that we offer!
Cadet Corporal Holly Held, aged 16 from Chapel House, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, said: “I joined 861 (Wideopen) Squadron. We meet twice a week at our purpose built Squadron and new recruits who are aged between 12 (and Year 8 at school) and 17 are welcome on a Monday and Thursday, 7.30-9.00pm every week to enquire about joining us. Just come along, see if you like it – there is no obligation to join but we think you will want to.”
