Recently Cadets and Staff from 148 (Barnsley) Squadron attended a special Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) service at St. John’s Church in Penistone. This year the VE service marked 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.
We were proud to be invited to parade our Squadron Banner along with the Royal Pioneer Corps Association Standard and The Royal British Legion (Barnsley Branch) Standard. Guests included many veterans, Barnsley Sea Cadets, local Government, Round Table members and local people who came to pay their respects and celebrate such an important event 70 years ago.
The congregation were entertained by Video footage of the great celebrations in London on 8th May 1945 and famous songs from the 1940s which everyone joined in with. First hand accounts of World War Two were read out, recalling the reality of World War Two and also the spirit of the British people that kept the country going. After the service the congregation were treated to a 1940s tea party and the Cadets were given the chance to chat to veterans and other guests.
It was a great experience for the Cadets to pay their respects and also join in the celebration of such an important day in history.
Well done to all that attended you did the Squadron and yourselves proud.
