Royal Air Force Air Cadets from148 (Barnsley) Squadron provided a Guard of Honour for Her Majesty the Queen at Sheffield Cathedral this morning as she distributes Maundy money. Her Majesty was accompanied by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.
The recipients are chosen for their Christian service they have given to the Church and the Community, they will receive one red and one white purse containing the coins. The red purse, contains – in ordinary coinage – money in lieu of food and clothing; the other, a white purse, contains silver Maundy coins consisting of the same number of pence as the years of the sovereign's age.
The Royal Maundy is an ancient ceremony which has its origin in the commandment Christ gave after washing the feet of his disciples on the day before Good Friday.
