A cold, damp and blustery morning saw Air Cadets from South and West Yorkshire Wing assemble at Thornes Park, Wakefield, for the inter-Squadron cross country race. Crowle Air Cadets were in attendance with 4 cadets, participating in the junior boy’s and the junior men’s competitions.
The race is held annually and is organised by South and West Yorkshire Wing and saw cadets from across the whole of South and West Yorkshire come together to complete the 3 mile long course. Despite the cold weather, attendance was high, with over 150 cadets, and the competition fierce.
Crowle Air Cadets Corporal’s Daniel Brady, Bradley Cram and Owen Wheatley entered the junior Boy’s completion, open to all male cadets aged 12-14. Despite not finishing in the top 10 as individuals, the team were placed 9th overall in the category, out of the 33 Squadrons within the Wing.
Flight Sergeant Daniel Wheatley represented the Squadron in the junior men’s race, open to all male cadets aged over 17. Flight Sergeant Wheatley managed to come in second, holding that position for much f the race and despite a strong push by 3rd place at the end. Despite there only being one team member, his victory places him 9th overall in the team competition. He has since been asked to represent South and West Yorkshire Wing in the upcoming inter-Wing competition in February. This will see him compete with the fastest cadets from the North of England.
Flying Officer V Docherty, 2nd in command at Crowle, said “It was great that the Squadron did so well. 2 9th places for the teams and an individual 2nd place as well.” She continued “It really shows what a little commitment and determination can achieve”.
