Air Cadets in Longbenton are flying high after being recognised as the most efficient and best training and development Air Cadet Squadron in the North-East for the third consecutive year!
It was only a year ago that Longbenton Squadron entered the record books when it was recognised as the best in the UK - the first time a unit on Tyneside had received the honour! Now, the young people are celebrating another historic achievement after retaining the Durham Trophy and the Pusey Trophy for the best training provision and administration respectively, for the third year running - a feat unheard of!
Cadet George Ferguson, 15, of Forest Hall said; "We're really excited about winning again and that all of our hard work is recognised by our superior officers. We have so much fun doing what we do, like flying, climbing, archery, sports and leadership as well as special events in the community."
"It's quite something to win for the third consecutive year," said Cadet Sergeant Lucy Gardiner, 17, of Forest Hall. "We just enjoy taking part in the activities and gain so many skills and qualifications that help us in life, so to win again is the icing on the cake" added Lucy.
Squadron boss, Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson said, "The two trophies are two major trophies awarded in Durham Northumberland Wing and to have won these in three consecutive years is a phenomenal achievement. It's a testament to our ethos, aptitude and sustainability. It proves that our young people desire to learn and take full advantage of the opportunities to do just that and enjoy some breathtaking opportunities." "I thank all of our adult volunteers for giving their time and ensuring that our young people are at the heart of our provision and demonstrates that our youngsters always come first and enjoy achieving many life-changing qualifications and experiences," added Gary.
The Longbenton Squadron is to receive the Honoury Freedom of the Borough of North Tyneside later this month, another first for a Squadron in the area.
