A life long member of the Air Cadets in Doncaster and a former Doncaster Magistrates was presented with the British Empire Medal by Her Majesties Lord Lieutenant for South Yorkshire, Mr David Moody in front of family friends and many of the staff and cadets from Armthorpe Air Cadets.
Mr Brian Wood has given a lifetime of service to both the Air Cadet Organisation and the wider community of Doncaster.
Brian joined 1053 (Armthorpe) Sqn as soon as he was old enough in 1951 and has been a member of the organisation ever since. As a cadet he reached the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer and went on to be Squadron Commander at 1053 (Armthorpe) Sqn for 16 years before moving to a Wing Staff Officer post.
During his tenure as Squadron Commander the squadron thrived and sustained growth, increasing cadet numbers from below 20 to over 70, and a second building had to be provided to accommodate them.
Not content to retire Brian remained tireless in his efforts and returned to the squadron as a Civilian Instructor. He has remained youthful and energetic. At the Squadron Brian still Instructs and managed a squadron shooting team to national standards (having been placed 3rd and 2nd in the ATC National Air Rifle shooting competition over recent years)
Throughout the years he has always been a point of contact for the Squadron with the Parish Council, British Legion and RAFA branches in the village of Armthorpe. Despite his heavy commitments to the Corps Brian also found time to serve the wider public of Doncaster as a Magistrate. He was a JP presiding over criminal cases for 18 years, concurrent with his service to the Corps, again only retiring from the bench at the upper age limit of 70 years of age.
Presenting the medal at Doncaster Mansion House Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Mr David Moody commented, "It's always a privilege to present these awards on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen. Brian is most deserving of this accolade. He is the epitome of a good citizen.”
Officer Commanding North Region Air Cadets Group Captain Steve Harpum from RAF Linton on Ouse read the citation and added, "I'm delighted to be able to be here to witness this tremendous achievement by Brian, after decades of service to the town and the cadets. My sincere congratulations for a well deserved award."
