Three cadets at Scarborough’s Air Training Corps Squadron recently competed at RAF Cranwell in the Corps Swimming Competition.

Initially four cadets travelled to Catterick Garrison for the Inter Squadron event, winning both Junior and Senior Men’s categories outright gaining 2 Bronze, 4 silvers and 2 gold’s. In October they were then selected for the Inter Wing event where they again won both categories outright gaining 6 gold and 2 silver medals between them.

Three cadets; Cadet Sergeant Matthew Colling, Cadet Rory Hobkinson and Cadet Oscar Tyler were then selected to travel to RAF Cranwell to represent North Region at the national event late in October.

As part of the Regional team, Sgt Colling gained a Bronze in Butterfly and Silver in the Freestyle and Medley relays. The Regional team came 1st overall in the whole of the Air Training Corps for the first time in 12 years having come 5th last year.

Flt Lt Steven Lewis, Officer Commanding said

“This represents a significant achievement for the boys – both in personal achievement terms and in again showing that 739 Squadron is continuing its success and going from strength to strength.

Very few cadets get to represent the Region at a national level and it is something that all of them should be justifiably be proud of.

It is of course a shame that Cadet Sergeant Ben Whaling was not selected for the Regional team, as he had done us proud at both the Squadron and Wing events, but competition at this level is extremely fierce and to have 3 cadets at that level is wonderful.”
