David Owens, a cadet at 886 (City of Ripon) Sqn and student at Ripon Grammar School, has been nominated for a Yorkshire Children of Courage Award after taking charge of a first aid incident where he found a gentlemen collapsed in Kirby Hill near Boroughbridge.
Earlier in the year, David assessed the unconscious male and placed him in the recovery position while instructing his older sister and mother to phone an ambulance, ensuring any passing cars weren't a danger and assisting with the assessment of the casualty. The man was taken to Harrogate District Hospital with extremely low blood sugars and released the next day.
David has managed to achieve a lot this year, despite having had 6 operations at Moorfields Eye Hospital to save the sight in his one good eye. His achievements included his 12 GCSE passes, 10 at A*/A grade, being awarded the Best Cadet trophy and promoted to Corporal, as well as helping the gentleman he found in the road and receiving the Commandant’s Special Commendation.
David will find out if he has won at an awards ceremony in Leeds on Friday 10th October.
