Air Cadets from 234 City of Durham Squadron are celebrating after being named the best sporting squadron in the North East. This came in a very successful weekend for the squadron after also winning the Durham Northumberland Wing swimming competition.
Throughout the last year, Cadets from the Squadron have outperformed the competition in a wide range of activities including cross country, football, athletics and rugby. Female cadets have also been particularly successful in Hockey and Netball with Cadet Becky Royal, 15, being selected to represent the north of the UK at Hockey and Cadet Sarah Rowell, also 15, representing the same region at both Hockey and Netball. In athletics the squadron team won 5 gold medals and 2 silvers putting in a very strong showing across the competition.
However it was at swimming where the Cadets really excelled, with the entire Junior Girls and Senior Boys teams coming first and the Squadron winning the overall competition. In total 16 gold medals were won including three relay events, showcasing the Cadets’ team spirit. Cadet Corporal Andrew Higgin, 17, put in a particularly strong performance in the senior boys backstroke, winning the gold medal and also setting a new record for the North East.
This success has been down to the effort of all the Cadets at the Squadron but particular credit must go to Cadet Royal who has participated in a variety of events throughout the year and only missed out on being named the Best Sporting Female Cadet in the North East by one point.
The Air Cadets is open to all boys and girls from Year 8 to Year 13 – for more information on how to join the Air Cadets, visit the Squadron’s website at www.234squadron.org.uk or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more details. Directions to the Squadron can be found on the website.
