In February 2014 the Squadron held it’s first dining-in, formal dinner for some years.

Over 103 Cadet, Squadron, Sector and Wing Staff, current serving personnel, parents, guardians and our honoured guests attended the event held at Barnsley Rugby Club. We were honoured to hear from Mr Martin Withers who is the current Vulcan Chief Pilot and famously was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for his role in the bombing the airfield at Port Stanley in the Falklands war. Mr Withers speech was excellent and was mainly directed at the Cadets in the room for good reason. Great inspiration was taken from the core message, that although things may look impossible on first glance, anything is achievable with hard work and commitment.

We were honoured as a Squadron to receive a large signed picture of Vulcan XM607 from Mr Withers which is the aircraft from the Black Buck mission that Mr Withers flew in. The picture now proudly hangs in the Squadron building.

In addition to Mr Withers we were joined by his wife Laura and also Mr and Mrs Thomas from The Vulcan To The Sky Club. We asked our guests to dig deep for a collection for The Vulcan To The Sky on the night.

Mrs Thomas has recently been in touch to let us know how much we raised on the night, we thrilled to receive the following email:

Hi Mandy

I am in the process of a more formal thank you for such a lovely evening but I have to say we really enjoyed being part of your special night. I have totalled up the donations and it comes to £242.12 which is fantastic. Thank you so much. It is donations like this that make a difference.

We were both very impressed with 148 ATC Squadron. What a wonderful group of youngsters and being led by such a dedicated team! I hope you will be able to work more with XH558 and we will see you at Cold War Jets in May.

Wishing you all every success and hope to see you soon

Kind regards

Jane Vulcan to the Sky Club
