On Sunday 19th January 2014 three young cadets from 1053 (Armthorpe) Squadron undertook their ‘Gliding Induction Course (GIC)’ with 644 Gliding Squadron based at RAF Syerston.
Their flights involved learning the basics of the RAF’s gliding operations and then they later took control of the aircraft themselves in order to learn basic flying techniques, such as turns. Having never flown in the ‘Grob Viking T Mk1’ conventional glider, a feeling of excitement was professed by all.
Squadron Flying and Gliding Officer, CI Kyle Jones said, “All three cadets thoroughly enjoyed their experience and may now continue onto further training and flights by progressing through the next two GIC tasks available and hopefully strive towards the prestigious and coveted ‘Air Cadet Gliding Scholarship’...and perhaps even further.”
