Four Stockport Air Cadets experienced the high life in one of the Air Cadets fleet of Gliders when they visited RAF Ternhill near Market Drayton recently.
The cadets from Heaviley based 162 (Stockport) Squadron had the chance to fly in a Vigilant Glider for the first time, when they undertook a Gliding Induction Course in one of the Air Cadet Organisation’s own fleet of Vigilant motor-gliders.
The Gliding Induction Course aims to teach cadets how the basic flight controls of a glider work in a "hands on" environment reinforcing the Principles of Flight theory training they have already received. Each cadet had the opportunity to take control of the aircraft during their flight.
Cadet Josh Parry (14) said: "It is the best thing I have done in cadets since I joined. After I got my parachute on and got into the glider I was very nervous but I couldn’t wait to get into the air. The flight went past in a whirl and we were soon back on the ground.”
Cadet Savannah Whittaker (13) said: I really enjoyed gliding and will certainly do it again. I found the experience exciting and inspiring and I already can’t wait for my next flight!”
Gliding is one of many activities offered at Stockport Air Cadets. Girls and boys from 13 years of age have the chance to do many activities including visits to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, adventure training, target shooting & camps.
The squadron meets every Monday and Thursday night from 7pm at their Headquarters, Lockwood Fold, Buxton Road, Heaviley, Stockport, SK2 6LS and is currently recruiting new cadets.
