Saturday 23rd November saw the return of the Squadron Presentation Evening, something that has been missing for a few years due to cadet numbers. The increase in recruits to the Squadron not only made the event viable once more but also made the competition for trophies very tough indeed.
The event was once again held at the Scarthwaite Hotel and consisted of a review of the year, presentations of awards and then a buffet, music and ‘dancing’. Cadets were presented with a variety of awards including classification badges, first aid awards and Wing and Region blues that had been earned during the last twelve months. Cadets were also able to show off the sports trophies won for cross country and swimming as well as the team awards earned by the Squadron and Wing Road Marching teams at Cosford and Nijmegen. These were followed by the individual trophies awarded for those cadets who had stood out during the last 18 months and rounded off with a promotion from Cadet Corporal to Cadet Sergeant for one of the outstanding performers on the Squadron, Sergeant Alston.
The awards were followed by a fantastic buffet prepared and served by the staff of the Scarthwaite Hotel and a raffle to raise money for Squadron funds. The raffle took slightly longer than expected as some people were repeated winners (the staff and committee but I can guarantee that it wasn’t a fix!) and some tickets were drawn again to make sure everyone had a chance of winning! The cadets then changed out of their uniforms and got on with the serious business of the evening, dancing competitions! This quickly escalated into males versus females and then staff and parents were all dragged into it…..sadly there were plenty of photographs and videos taken so there’s no denying it happened!
Overall it was a fantastic evening, the right balance of formal and fun and my thanks go to all concerned with organising and running the event. The challenge for the cadets is to make the trophy decisions for next year as difficult as this years were!
