Air Cadets in Longbenton have enjoyed a festive leadership session with a difference...creative leadership with storyteller Chris Bostock.

Chris attended the squadron to lead the session as part of the ongoing ‘Operation Toon.’ Operation Toon aims to expand horizons and raise aspirations by developing an understanding in local history through the provision of exciting, stimulating and challenging activities.

Chris first engaged the youngsters with traditional Northumberland tales before leadership tasks saw the youngsters gain skills in listening, communication and problem-solving by taking a creative approach. The young people shared their ideas and thoughts on Christmas before competing to make Christmas shapes by using only their bodies, and to see how long the teams could keep a piece of paper flying for unaided!

“It was really good fun!” said cadet George Binfield, 15, of Forest Hall. “The exercises followed a simple format and we knew what we needed to do but to do them we had to carefully listen to each other and make sure we played our part so the team succeeded.” “It did really make us think about how we work with others and how we can work together to create images and ideas to solve problems,” added George.

Chris rounded off the evening with a few festive stories, including that of St. Nick, that have travelled around the world. Cadet Rachel Findlay, 14, of Holystone, said; “The stories were excellent and Chris had us hooked from the start!”

Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson said; “Leadership is an important aspects of our training. It was great to have Chris run a session that focussed upon the creative development of our young people. We encourage our young people to think for themselves and to take responsibility for themselves by using their creativity to solve problems. Such skills will assist our young people along their future paths in a world full of new concepts, technologies and ideas.”
