642 VGS - 'Teamwork'

2009 has been the best year at 642 VGS for a very long time; it saw our 50th year of operations from RAF Linton on Ouse, a busy course in August at RAF Topcliffe where amongst other achievements the Linton Station Commander’s son achieved his Gold wings. August also saw the arrival of our fifth aircraft as we welcomed members of Cumbria & North Lancs Wing to our squadron. It has also been our most productive year, having achieved 29 Gliding Scholarships in 2006 that has risen to 90 in 2009, 76 of which have been awarded their Silver wings.

Cadets Do Themselves Proud Again at Rock it Ball

York was treated to some fast and furious action recently as Rock-It-Ball players competed for the title of V3 English Open Champion. V3 is a singles version of what is widely regarded as the fastest-growing sport in the world. Pure Rock-It-Ball is played 5 v 5 in a sports hall with 5 balls. Points are scored by hitting opponents with the balls or by catching an opponent’s strike. V3 makes the sport much more gladiatorial as 3 players on a squash court fight it out every man for himself. And with 3 balls in play it makes for an intense and exhausting experience as the winner is the player to concede the least number of points.
