        <title>Longbenton Band Fly in to Number 2 Spot!</title>

        <description>Youngsters from 2344 (Longbenton) Air Cadets, are celebrating an historic achievement after reaching the number two spot in a band competition. The cadets represented the Durham Northumberland area in the Ensemble category of the inter-squadron band competition against other cadet units from across the north of England.&amp;nbsp;Having practiced hard over recent months and performing at Grey&amp;rsquo;s Monument and the Metro Centre, the cadets played their repertoire named &amp;lsquo;Surfing The Sun&amp;rsquo; to crowds and judges at RAF Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire. The repertoire includes a melody of hits including Summer of 69&amp;rsquo; and Local Hero.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;</description>

        <description>Sunday the 6th July 2010 will go down in history as an event the Cadet Forces will not forget for a long time. The sun was shining over RAF Scampton, home of the Red Arrows, but what was going to happen was historic. To mark the Cadet 150, 19 Cadets were chosen from across the UK and all the cadet forces, the Air Training Corps, Army Cadet Force, Sea Cadets Corps and Combined Cadet Force . Only seven lucky Cadets &amp;nbsp;got to fulfill the dream practically everyone wants to come true of flying with the world famous Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows. </description>

        <description>2008 (Bawtry) Squadron was recently visited by Sqn Ldr Trevor Souter, Chief of Staff (COS) &amp;ndash; South &amp;amp; West Yorkshire Wing, to formally welcome the new OIC, WO (ATC) Iain Kirk and to introduce him to the cadets and staff. As part of the visit on the evening Sqn Ldr Souter spoke to many cadets and staff about the great things happening at the squadron and ACO. During final parade there was a surprise for one member of the staff team as Sqn Ldr Souter&amp;nbsp;presented Civilian Instructor Mark Harbon with the Commandant's Commendation for Meritorious Service Award.</description>

        <description>In May, the band from 1224 (Wharfedale) took part in the&amp;nbsp;celebrations to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;FS&amp;nbsp;Dan Connor (alto sax) and Cdt Rhys&amp;nbsp;Leighton&amp;nbsp;(cornet) accompanied by Sgt Sam White and Cdt Tomas St. John on the guitars played on the gallery in the Officers Mess during the early evening and&amp;nbsp;then the formal band played traditional marches outside for the sunset ceremony.</description>

        <description>The recent bank holiday provided Askern Air Cadets with the perfect opportunity to get out into the countryside, to complete a Duke of Edinburgh&amp;rsquo;s Award Silver level expeditions in the Yorkshire Wolds. 3 cadets from Askern, one from Crowle and a fifth from Batley made up the team, who undertook the expedition.&amp;nbsp; The expedition saw the cadets undertake a 3 day venture, camping each night and carrying everything they needed for the event with them.&amp;nbsp; The cadets walked around 11 miles each day, exploring the Yorkshire Wolds, and camped overnight, cooking for themselves for the entire expedition.</description>

        <description>Air Cadets from 861 (Wideopen), 1509 (Blaydon), 733 (Newcastle Airport) and 1114 (Gosforth) Squadrons have spent a day working hard at Gosforth Park doing community service as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.&amp;nbsp;The cadets were clearing the old Scout camp area of litter and scrap metal prior to other Air Cadet activities such as Fieldcraft and Military Skills Exercises taking place in the woodland areas.

        <description>Air Cadets from 224 (Hexham) Squadron impressed the public at the Northumberland County Show on Monday 31st May with their extraordinary display of teamwork, precision and dedication to the tasks given to them. On the day before the show the team of cadets arrived at the ground to set up their own stand but they were soon split into groups to help set up the rest of the arena ready for the big event the next day by moving tables and chairs and setting up barriers.</description>

Local Askern Air Cadets got a surprise recently, when they were asked to step outside their building, as someone wanted to pay them a visit.&amp;nbsp; Much bemused, the cadets stood outside, looking for their visitor.&amp;nbsp; A few moments later, the South Yorkshire Police helicopter flew over.

8 local Askern Air Cadets recently attended RAF Church Fenton for the opportunity to fly in powered aircraft.&amp;nbsp; The flights allow the cadets to experience flight first hand and also put into practice what they have learnt in the classroom.&amp;nbsp; This was followed up by a visit to RAF Linton on Ouse, for the chance to go gliding as well.
