Will's Flying High in Tornado F3 (In the circuit for touch and go )

2009-01-30 08:25:35

Viewed 207 times.

On Friday 7th December, Flt Lt Will Scott, OC 184 (Manchester South) Sqn and Project Bader Developer, had a 1 1/2 hour flight in a Tornado F3 with OC 111 Sqn, at RAF Leuchars. The flight was organised by Comdt AC in recognition of the work that Flt Lt Scott has done over the past 2 years on Project Bader.

The plan was to take a twin stick aircraft out over the North Sea at 250 feet and acellerate to over Mach 1, before pulling up to 20,000 feet to meet with a tanker for air-to-air refuelling, and then for Will to follow through and then fly his own aerobatics. "However, as the time for the flight approached, " explained Will,  the winds became too strong for AAR, and then as we were about to taxi the ground crew spotted a hydraulic leak, so we had to swap to the standby aircraft, which was single stick, and had drop tanks, which prevented supersonic flight. The plan was quickly changed and instead we decided to do a few circuits at Linton-on-Ouse, to buzz RHQ North, and then back to Scotland to do aerobatics. It took about 10 minutes to get to Linton in the Tornado, and later that night about 5 hours by car!"

"Doing a loop in a Tornado is an amazing experience. The first time the g-suit kicked in it took me by surprise, but I naturally started to do the exercises as briefed by the doctor to counter the effects of g. It took just a few seconds to go from 5000 to 10,000 feet at the top of the loop, and yet it was so smooth, so different to a Chipmunk!"

What Will hadn't realised before the flight was that he would have to do some work during the flight, as not all instruments and controls are duplicated to the front cockpit. He would be responsible for setting the GPS and radar systems on leaving the HAS, and would have to operate several systems once airborne. "I was surprised at how small the cockpit is, and with the amount of flying safety clothing and equipment I was wearing, it was quite cramped and difficult to reach some of the switches. I have a great admiration for the crews who work in such a cramped environment, sometimes for extremely long durations." said Will. "I'm just waiting for my Navigator brevet to come through now" he joked.

"Even though things didn't go to the original plan, I still had a thoroughly enjoyable day, and have a great admiration for the crews who work in such a cramped environment, often under extreme pressure."

Copyright BBC Look North 2008 When the cadets of 44F (City of Bradford) Squadron Air Cadets went Air Experience Flying at RAF Church Fenton yesterday, they took along their latest recruit to enjoy the thrills of aerobatics. Newly enrolled Cadet Pudsey Bear, mascot of the BBC Children in Need Appeal came along as well. As part of the promotion to the BBC Children In Need Appeal, the Bradford Cadets, ably supervised by Civilian Instructor Yaseen Rahman, who just happens to be a director of BBC Look North in Leeds, Pudsey had been invited to fly with 9 Air Experience Flights commanding officer, Flight Lieutenant Henley Johnson, but at the last minute lost his nerve and bottled out.

F-15 flying with one wing by an Israeli Pilot

2009-01-28 18:45:01

Viewed 206 times.

In 1983 an F-15 of the Israeli airforce collided with a Skyhawk while doing a practice. The Skyhawk blew away but the pilot abandoned it peacefully. The F-15 lost his right wind but the pilot, Ziv Nadivi,  couldnt see it because of the vast fuel fumes that covered it. The pilot and the navigator Yehuar Gal did not know they were flying on one wing only, a state which is of course "impossible" to fly in They did not abandoned the jet but continued to land a crash landing. Because of the high velocity of the jet (450kmph) while landing, the stopping hook was cut away and the jet stopped a few meters before the end of the runway. After more than 20 years, we can finally see the movie. (from the History channel)
