At the ceremony Flight Sergeant McCormack was presented his certificate by Levison Wood (famous for walking the length of the River Nile) along side His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. He also had the pleasure of meeting Commandant Air Cadets Dawn McCafferty, with whom the picture was taken. The gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award is highly sort after when applying for jobs and stands you out from the crowd. To achieve this Flight Sergeant McCormack had to do multiple activities from a four day expedition in the Cheviot Hills to a week long camp at DTE Warcop alongside months of sport, volunteering and learning a new skill.

The VGS pilots also showed them around the aircraft, explaining the control surfaces and cockpit instrumentation. They also found out a little of the varied history of the base from a talk and airfield tour. The cadets were among the very first crop to have a go on the VGS's new Part Task Trainer; a computerised training tool. The visit finished with a trip over to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The day was an excellent consolidation to the Principles of Airmanship lectures and will set the cadets up well for when gliding returns.

Congratulations to Addison C. and Armstrong for their promotions to sergeant and to Tinkler, who became a corporal. Their mixture of high attendance, well kept uniform, use of initiative, strong course reports and good attitude has seen them rewarded. The decisions were tough for the staff to make and obviously left some disappointed. We've been pleased to see those who missed out on promotions congratulate their fellow cadets and get behind their new NCOs, showing the maturity the squadron expects from its cadets. Remember; if you follow the principle of RISE- respect, integrity, service and excellence, you could be next.
