RAF Air Cadet Awarded Mayors Cadet

Flight Sergeant Joshua Clegg aged 17 years, from 59 Huddersfield Squadron, RAF Air Cadets and a student at Rastrick Sixth Form, has been awarded the prestigious appointment as the Mayor’s Cadet for 2017/18 for Kirklees. He began with his first official engagement on Monday 19th June by the way of a ceremony held in the Huddersfield town centre with a flag raising ceremony for the Armed Forces veterans followed by a poem reading.

15 of the Cadets from 59 Squadron took a trip to the Skiing complex at the XScape, Yorkshire. Two of the cadets, and one staff member took to the slopes by themselves thanks to prior experience. Overall, it was a great day out for the cadets!

Nine Cadets from 59 Squadron participated in the annual Bunting Long Range Shooting Competition this weekend. This was made out to be a great day! Not only did the Squadron win the competition, the best shots in the 33 Squadrons who participated, came from 59.

Cross Country Team Off to a Flying Start!

Cadets at 59 Squadron started the year with sporting success at the Inter-Squadron Cross Country competition held at Thornes Park, Wakefield.

Open to all 33 Squadrons and the Detached Flight in South and West Yorkshire Wing, the squadron took a top three finish in three of the five age categories, including first place for the members in the Youth Boys category and a race win for Cadet Josh Whitwam.

Flight Lieutenant Kirsty Piccavey is the new Commanding Officer at 59 Squadron.

She takes over from Flt. Lt. Gillian Halman, who had led the Squadron since summer 2009.

Flt Lt Piccavey, from Linthwaite, is a former cadet of 59 Squadron and was previously in charge of 1466 (Holmfirth) Squadron.

High Standard Set at Rifle Drill Competition

Cadets from 59 (Huddersfield) and 1466 (Holmfirth) squadrons travelled to RAF Halton to represent North Region at the Corps Drill Competition with a demonstration of arms drill. The continuity sequence, carried out without commands, was devised and trained by Warrant Officer Kevin Piccavey, Regional Warrant Officer at North Region. The cadets have been training for eight weeks, a total of 32 hours, starting from scratch with no previous experience and culminating in a 4 minute drill continuity sequence.

Post-Remembrance Visit to Arboretum Impresses

Staff and cadets from Huddersfield and 1466 (Holmfirth) squadrons braved the winter rain to visit the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. After a group photo the cadets were able to explore the area at their own leisure, meeting up again at the Chapel for a talk about the origins of the Arboretum.

In the early hours of Saturday 15 August, 11 cadets from Huddersfield joined cadets from Holmfirth, Halifax and Spen Valley to set off on the 10-hour coach journey to RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland.

Swimming Success!

On Sunday 6 September, 59 Squadron attended the inter-squadron swimming championships in a bid to win as many events as possible. It was a great afternoon seeing all of the other cadets from other squadrons and the cadets and NCOs that attended did have a lot of fun. It was really intense in my opinion due to the number of competent swimmers from other squadrons present however despite that we did do exceptionally well as a squadron this year.
