WO Chris Fitt of 2454 (Warbreck) Squadron celebrated 25 years of continuous service to the Squadron on Thursday 10th June 2010. He rejoined the Squadron in 1985, having previously served as a cadet in the 1960s, and has been there ever since.

Cadets from Wharfedale have had great success in the National Air Rifle competition.  Sgt Tom Smith, Cpl Jamie Partovi and Cpl Chris Cavaliere came 8th in the two positional Air Rifle competition.  CWO Scott Watson, FS Dan Connor and Sgt Alex Chambers came 5th in the three positional Air Rifle competition.

Mayor Helps Air Cadets Take-Off
The Mayor of North Tyneside, Mrs Linda Arkley, joined Air Cadets from 2344 (Longbenton) Squadron to officially unveil a Flight Simulator on the squadron that was funded by North Tyneside Council. The Cadets were successful in a bid for funding last year and they have built the Flight Simulator themselves as well as designing and constructing the Aerospace Suite where the simulator is based.

On a grey and rainy Sunday morning, over 60 cadets and staff from South and West Yorkshire Wing braved the elements to show their support for Cancer Research UK at the Race for Life at Pontefract Park. Cadets from Knottingley, Castleford, Pontefract, South Elmsall and Barnsley put on a show of force to help the organisers ensure the day went smoothly.

2008 (Bawtry) Squadron was recently visited by Sqn Ldr Trevor Souter, Chief of Staff (COS) – South & West Yorkshire Wing, to formally welcome the new OIC, WO (ATC) Iain Kirk and to introduce him to the cadets and staff. As part of the visit on the evening Sqn Ldr Souter spoke to many cadets and staff about the great things happening at the squadron and ACO. During final parade there was a surprise for one member of the staff team as Sqn Ldr Souter presented Civilian Instructor Mark Harbon with the Commandant's Commendation for Meritorious Service Award.

Jimmy Commended for Services to the Community
Jimmy Jackson, 66, of Longbenton has received the Chairman of North Tyneside Council’s Commendation this week for his services to the community. Jimmy received his certificate from the Chairman of North Tyneside Council, Councillor Duncan McLellan at a special ceremony held at the Council’s Silverlink site. The Chairman’s Commendation is awarded to volunteers and groups to recognise their voluntary work and show the appreciation of those living in the borough.

Wharfedale band support Linton-on-Ouse
In May, the band from 1224 (Wharfedale) took part in the celebrations to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.  FS Dan Connor (alto sax) and Cdt Rhys Leighton (cornet) accompanied by Sgt Sam White and Cdt Tomas St. John on the guitars played on the gallery in the Officers Mess during the early evening and then the formal band played traditional marches outside for the sunset ceremony.

 A brief meeting on Remembrance Sunday has lead to a formal affiliation between Askern Air Cadets and the Burgwallis branch of the Royal British Legion.  Askern Air Cadets normally parade at Bentley, but a request for help led to a contingent parading in Askern, which in turn lead to the chance meeting.

Out in the Open Wolds
The recent bank holiday provided Askern Air Cadets with the perfect opportunity to get out into the countryside, to complete a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Silver level expeditions in the Yorkshire Wolds. 3 cadets from Askern, one from Crowle and a fifth from Batley made up the team, who undertook the expedition.  The expedition saw the cadets undertake a 3 day venture, camping each night and carrying everything they needed for the event with them.  The cadets walked around 11 miles each day, exploring the Yorkshire Wolds, and camped overnight, cooking for themselves for the entire expedition.

It was an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to transport 7 members of Manchester Branch of the Air Crew Association to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire on 08 June 10, alongside some of their wives and partners & a member of staff from Manchester’s Imperial War Museum & a number of Air Cadets from 318 Sale squadron Air training Corps.

Last Sunday at RAF Linton-on-Ouse near York, Air Training Corps national marching band champions Royton Squadron won the North Region band competition and will represent East Lancashire Wing ATC, and North Region, in the national finals later in the year. The band competed against other squadron bands from across the north of England from Cheshire up to Durham and Northumberland.

Air Cadets from 861 (Wideopen), 1509 (Blaydon), 733 (Newcastle Airport) and 1114 (Gosforth) Squadrons have spent a day working hard at Gosforth Park doing community service as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The cadets were clearing the old Scout camp area of litter and scrap metal prior to other Air Cadet activities such as Fieldcraft and Military Skills Exercises taking place in the woodland areas.

Four newly enrolled Bawtry Air Cadets recently attended central gliding school at RAF Syerston for their first opportunity to fly in a Viking Glider at 643 Squadron.  The level 1 gliding induction course (GIC) undertaken by the cadets on the day concluded their first ever flight whilst putting into practice what they have previously learnt during their academic training at the squadron.

In the last week not one, but two air cadets from 224 (Hexham) Squadron have taken to the skies above North Yorkshire on a solo flight in a powered glider. Cadet Sergeants Stuart Bell and Peter Skentelbery were both on a Gliding Scholarship provided by the Air Training Corps at RAF Topcliffe.

Air Cadets from 224 (Hexham) Squadron impressed the public at the Northumberland County Show on Monday 31st May with their extraordinary display of teamwork, precision and dedication to the tasks given to them. On the day before the show the team of cadets arrived at the ground to set up their own stand but they were soon split into groups to help set up the rest of the arena ready for the big event the next day by moving tables and chairs and setting up barriers.

Local Askern Air Cadets got a surprise recently, when they were asked to step outside their building, as someone wanted to pay them a visit.  Much bemused, the cadets stood outside, looking for their visitor.  A few moments later, the South Yorkshire Police helicopter flew over.

8 local Askern Air Cadets recently attended RAF Church Fenton for the opportunity to fly in powered aircraft.  The flights allow the cadets to experience flight first hand and also put into practice what they have learnt in the classroom.  This was followed up by a visit to RAF Linton on Ouse, for the chance to go gliding as well.

Yeadon Air Cadets are celebrating achieving second place in the Wing Drill Competition. The team consisting mainly of cadets taking part in their first ever competition gained the squadron’s highest placing in a Wing Drill Competition for many years. Having previously won their Group Drill Competition seven years in a row in South and West Yorkshire Wing, but falling short in the overall wing competition, the squadron entered somewhat unknown territory when they went straight into the wing drill competition against the 27 other squadrons in their new wing, Central and East Yorkshire Wing.

Teamwork, Organisation and of course good weather, were three of the main factors that led to this year’s Easter Gliding Course run by 635 and 645 at RAF Topcliffe, being a success. 17 cadets, from various corners of the country achieved their first solo flights, as well as 4 Flight Staff Cadets completing their Advanced Gliding Training.

First place is becoming the norm for Central and East Yorkshire Wing sports teams of recent times, such is their skill, morale and commitment and so it continued at the North Region Inter Wing Sports Day held on 23rd May.

Air Cadets Receive Lord Lieutenant Certificate for Poppy Appeal
Longbenton Air Cadets have received recognition from the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Sir Nigel Sherlock, having raised an impressive £2,888.43 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal last year – the most raised from amongst the cadet organisations in the region. The Air Cadets from 2344 (Longbenton) Squadron were out collecting for the Appeal during the weeks leading up to Remembrance Day back in November last year.

Askern Air Cadets recently entered the South and West Yorkshire Wing drill competition, held at RAF Church Fenton.  The competition sees Air Cadet units from all over South and West Yorkshire come together to participate. The Askern team contained a lot of new cadets, some who have only been with the Squadron a few weeks.  Despite this and a reduced team, the cadets went to give it their all.

Army and Air Cadets came together at Goole TA Centre to take part in a joint weapons training event.  The weekend event saw a number of different cadets, from both the Army Cadet Force and the Air Training Crops, attend to take part in various weapons training and target shooting.  Unfortunately the Sea Cadet Corps were unable to attend and make it a full tri-service event.

Goole Air Cadets Remember
While most youngsters are out playing in the sunny weather, a group of Air Cadets from Goole took time out to remember those men and women who served at RAF Snaith during the Second World War. The Pollington Memorial Garden Committee holds an event every April at the memorial garden, on the site of the former airfield, to remember the airmen and women who served at RAF Snaith during the Second World War.  The event commemorates those who served at the station during the conflict and honours those who are no longer with us.

Recently Air Cadets from Askern and Goole came together to complete their actual and practice expeditions for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.  The expedition required the cadets to plan and walk 20 miles over 2 days, while camping overnight.

After a successful six years with East Cheshire and South Manchester Wing - we bid farewell to Wing Commander Steve Morris. Wing Commander Morris served in the Royal Air Force from 1979 – 1987, initially on 54(F) Squadron flying Jaguars in the Offensive Support role. Latterly he was an Instructor Pilot and Flight Commander at the RAF School of Air Navigation.

Cadets pass Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award

Sgt Mathew Cox, Sgt Thomas Hughs and Sgt Graham Lindsey at 2388 Castleford Air Cadets successfully completed the Silver Duke of Edinburgh award by walking 30 miles over 3 days. The Award is a challenging programme of activities, and young people who participate can learn new skills, help others and experience adventure. It is recognised by employers, universities, the Armed Services and many others as an outstanding development programme because Award holders are keen to take on new challenges, have a higher level of self confidence than their counterparts, and have leadership qualities with the added experience of teamwork.

Special congratulations are being given to Yeadon Air Cadet Instructor Cadet Flight Sergeant Matthew Wray on his promotion to Instructor Cadet Warrant Officer. The hard-working 19 year old, has been a cadet at 2168 (Yeadon) Squadron since April 2005, achieving his Silver Gliding Wings and playing Junior and Senior Wing Rugby at regional level. A Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award holder, Matthew is also the senior non-commissioned cadet in charge of the squadron’s successful percussion band and drum major with the Air Cadets North Region massed band.

Recently cadets at 2388 Castleford Air Cadets successfully completed their first class classification after recently being recruited. This is the first step towards achieving a
BTEC in aviation studies. This training given to gain the first class classification is designed to give you the basic skills and knowledge you will need before attending RAF Stations and joining in the full activities of the Squadron.

Marching on together !!!

The RAF 2 Days Marches took place over the weekend of 24th & 25th April. The wing took 5 teams, two entered for the 20km march and three for the 40km march. With over 70 cadets and staff, Central & East Yorkshire Wing were the second largest contingent at the event (Middlesex Wing had 90 participating) with some 1400 marchers participating.  All ours completed and were awarded their prestigious medals at the end of a gruelling 2 days of marching in lovely late spring weather.

Adult Sergeant Carl Alsop of 2487 (Easingwold) Squadron has
been awarded a prestigious honour in the fast-growing sport of
Rock-It-Ball.  The International Rock-It-Ball Federation has now
chosen the second round of entrants into the Rock-It-Ball Hall of
Fame which is designed to honour and thank those people who have
made an outstanding contribution to the development of the sport.  
This week the committee returned its unanimous decision to honour

The flights in GROB Tutors, RAF training aircraft, are provided to the cadets as part of the training the Air Training Corps offers to all air cadets. Following on from their recent visit to Royal Air Force Boulmer, Air Cadets from 2344 (Longbenton) Squadron paid a weekend visit to Royal Air Force Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire. The cadets aged between 13-19 attended the R.A.F station as part of their aerospace training where they engaged in flying missions. The cadets spent the weekend on the base with service personnel, gaining first hand practical experience in how to fly aircraft.

After 4 months of training, 8 young people have passed out to become Air Cadets at 162 (Stockport) Squadron. The teenagers, who ranged from 13-15 years old, went through technical training including weapons handling, drill, adventure training, and learning about the history of the Royal Air Force and the Air Cadets.

On Sunday, 25th April 2010, Cadets from 92 (Chorley) squadron had a busy day parading through the streets of Chorley in both the Morning and in the Afternoon. In the morning, cadets and staff took part in the annual Falklands Day Parade in which ex- servicemen and women combined with a marching party from the Welsh Guards marched through Chorley’s town centre to the cenotaph in Astley Park and took part in a memorial service in memory of those who lost their lives in the Falklands Conflict.

On May Day, cadets from 1224 (Wharfedale) Squadron had a busy and successful day at Ilkley Carnival. An early start was required to set up on the Carnival Field.  At 1130hrs, the band took part in the 52 minute parade through town.  1224 had two special visitors; Adult Sgt David Pagdin on tuba and Cadet Cpl Chris Pagdin on cornet from 23 (South Elmsall) Sqn.

Air Cadets Strikes Gold at Athletics Competition
Two Cadet Non-Commissioned Officers from 861 (Wideopen) Squadron have recently struck gold at the Durham and Northumberland Wing athletics competition. The competition, which took place on 25th April 2010 at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow involved all 36 individual units from across Durham and Northumberland. Cadets competed in a number of events in their age groups which included running, high and long jumps, javalin and the discus.
