Seven Air Cadets from Wharfedale joined the Air Cadet National Marching Band and took part in the Birmingham Tattoo just before Christmas. The whole weekend gave them all the experience of performing at a much higher level with formal dress rehearsals at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham.

Wideopen Air Cadets, Jessica Marran (16), Alex Burn (14) and Kieran Thompson (14) are celebrating after being promoted into leadership roles. Jessica was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and Alex and Kieran to Corporal. The trio received their stripes from the Squadrons Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant James Elliott on 8th December 2011 on the Squadrons final parade.

Air cadets from Longbenton swapped their aeroplanes for fire engines as they enjoyed a visit from fire-fighters from Newcastle North Fire Station. The cadets gained an insight into the various roles that the Fire Service plays in serving the people of Tyne and Wear and gained a first hand practical experience into basic fire and rescue principles and got a tour of two operational fire appliances.

Sgt (ATC) Philip Mason of No. 468 (Hyde & Hattersley) Squadron qualified this month as a Basic Expedition Leader (BELA). The Basic Expedition Leader Award Course is one of the qualifications accepted by the Air Cadet Organisation for delivering Adventurous Training to our cadets.

4 Askern Air Cadets recently attended RAF Church Fenton for the opportunity to fly in powered aircraft. The flights allow the cadets to experience flight first hand and also put into practice what they have learnt in the classroom.

The ‘Bears Tour of Duty’ is all about raising money for children who have lost parents in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event involves ‘Derrick’ the bear (Derrick because the operation in Afghanistan is called operation Herrick) travelling around with and performing numerous activities with allied forces in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Derrick’s mission is being coordinated by Captain KJ Bull, an Army Air Corps. Apache pilot with 653 Sqn.
